The "Five P's" Wallet Reference Card

The 5 P's Wallet Reference CardThe famous "All that is necessary . . ." quote from Edmund Burke, the National Violence Reduction Initiative logo, and End of Violence web site address appear on the face of the Five P's Wallet Reference Card. The five steps to applying the new Violence Integrative Prevention and Restoration (PAR) Model appear on the back of the card. The cards may be reproduced for your own use or to give to others (refer to the "Reproducing the Five P's Wallet Reference Card" to the right).

Those steps (called the "Five P's") are:

  1. Pause — Check to see if and how you’re affected (infected).
  2. Patient — Frame each episode of violence as an outbreak of disease, seeing the people involved as “patients” infected by violence.
  3. Power issue — Violence comes from an experience of loss of power. Identify the power issue.
  4. Power swap — Support replacing violence (unhealthy power) with healthy power.
  5. Power infusion — Assist others in creating an experience of healthy power (by listening, caring, modeling, etc.).

These steps are central to practical personal peacebuilding. They replace the punitive, vindictive, angry, and revenge-laden responses. Those using this process report that they have more success dealing with violence, experience a strong sense of healthy power, and are more confident dealing with violence and issues related to it. Apply the Five P's in your life and encourage others to apply them in their's.
